Celebrating the 126th Philippine Independence Day in Tasmania

A Night of Culture and Joy

The Filipino community in Tasmania came together in a spectacular fashion to celebrate the 126th Philippine Independence Day. Held at the illustrious Wrest Point Hotel Casino, the event showcased a dazzling array of stunning gowns, traditional Filipiniana costumes, vibrant cultural performances, and a series of engaging activities that left attendees in high spirits.

A Night of Elegance and Tradition

The evening was a true feast for the eyes, with members of the Filipino-Tasmanian community donning their finest attire. Stunning gowns and splendid Filipiniana costumes filled the Tasman Room, adding a touch of elegance and tradition to the celebration. The presence of the Philippine Consul of Tasmania, Mr. Rick Van Neutegem, added a layer of prestige to the event.

Artistic Highlights and Silent Auction

One of the highlights of the night was the presence of world-renowned Indigenous artist Elito Circa, popularly known as “Amangpintor.” His unique method of creating masterpieces captivated the audience. The intricate pieces he crafted during the event sparked a lively silent auction, with art enthusiasts eagerly vying for the chance to take home an “Amangpintor” original. The lucky winners walked away with smiles as big as their new art acquisitions.

Prizes, Pageantry, and Performances

The celebration was also marked by a grand raffle draw, where nearly $4,000 in cash prizes were awarded to lucky attendees, bringing even more excitement to the evening.

The pageantry segment crowned the night with elegance, featuring winners in several categories:

  • Lakambini: Norine Correa
  • Mutya: Hyacinth Asinas De Mesa
  • Hiyas: Gloria Reyes
  • Lakan: Max Leon Lakos
  • Maharlika: Christian Salvador
  • Ginoo: Alex Altman

These winners shone brightly, embodying the spirit and grace of the Filipino culture.

The programme reached its peak with a dynamic cultural performance by the Hugyaw Performing Group, led by Juliet Garcia and Randy Lauderes. Their vibrant showcase of Filipino culture was a fitting climax to an already spectacular evening. Randy Lauderes, who will be taking a sabbatical next year, ensured that this performance was one to remember.

Gratitude and Farewell

The night was filled with dancing, leaving many with sore legs but hearts full of joy, love, and friendship. The Philippines-Australia Community of Tasmania – PACT, Inc., under the leadership of President Jyosh Vizcarra and Vice President Eric Ruelo, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, volunteers, and attendees who contributed to the event’s success. This celebration marked a grand curtain call for their term, and they couldn’t have asked for a better send-off.

Indeed, the 126th Philippine Independence Day celebration in Tasmania was a night to remember. It was a celebration of culture, community, and the enduring spirit of the Filipino people. One for the ages, and certainly one for the record books.

Tagpuan 2023

To connect those who recently arrived in Tassie with those who had been here for some time, PACT Inc organised ‘TAGPUAN’, a celebration not only of hearts but also of new and old friendships. The community gathered at Tolosa Park in Glenorchy, enjoying some barbecue and Filipino food while listening to some live music, which somehow extended the Valentines feel. Furthermore, a number of resource speakers shared some valuable information to the attendees. Kerns Juan announced the second season of the mentorship programme, ‘Pagpayo’, while Pastor Joel Ortiz shared insights on pastoral care. Peter Sereno also inspired the newbies with his success story. PACT Inc is grateful to all its partner sponsors and Filipino-Tasmanians who took part by sharing their time, talent and energy.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle

PACT Inc did a BBQ drive to raise funds to gather new arrivals and allow them to connect with those who had been here longer. Thanks to Bunnings Glenorchy for their graciousness in letting us use their place and resources. Thanks to all who supported the drive.

Christmas Fiesta 2022

The 3rd of December was a cracking day, which helped make the Christmas Fiesta 2022 become a huge success.

Thanks to the community for their all our support, including the stallholders, performers, officers, volunteers and sponsors.

The day was filled with games, performances, food, prizes and surprises, including a raffle draw, which gave away a brand new TV.

Fae Guir-Timajo also bested over ten other contestants to grab the Karaoke Title of the year.

Moreover, some of our Filipino-Tasmanian car enthusiasts came to showcase their beloved rides to the delight of the other aficionados.

It was a great time to celebrate the most joyful time of the year, the Filipino way.
